Exercise for Cancer Treatment

Fitness is an Essential Component of Cancer Treatment

Gone are the days where doctors recommend only bed rest for illnesses. Instead, they are more likely to tell you to get up and exercise! While this seems counter-intuitive, there is significant evidence to show that exercise can increase blood flow, remove harmful cancer-causing toxins, and increase endorphins. Before developing your exercise regimen, take a look at the benefits of exercise.

Fitness is a Natural Prescription for Cancer Treatment

Gone are the days where doctors recommend only bed rest for illnesses. Instead, they are more likely to tell you to get up and exercise. While this seems counter-intuitive, there is significant evidence to show that exercise can increase blood flow, remove harmful cancer-causing toxins, and increase endorphins. Before developing your exercise regimen, take a look at the benefits of exercise.

1. Reduce the Risk of Cancer Development

People at risk for colon cancer should ensure that they exercise as much as possible to remove toxins from the colon by expelling waste. This is one major benefit of exercise. To receive the maximum benefit, try exercising 30 minutes per day for five days per week.

Exercise Helps Improve Well-Being and Mood

2. Physical Activity Plays a Role in Energy Balance

Energy balance is important for patients because they often feel fatigue. When patients start exercising, they actually begin to feel more energized. Exercise is important to helping patients feel better and improve their well-being and mood.

3. Physical Activity Increases Immunity

Physical activity improves immunity, and this helps to fight free-radicals in the body, which have been known to cause cancer. With a strong immune system, the body can fight off disease naturally and reduce the amount of chemotherapy or radiation treatment needed. If treatment is required, a patient who has been active prior to chemotherapy is more likely to heal faster from surgery and treatment than a person who has been sedentary.

4. Physical Activity May Improve Prognosis of Life

Many patients can improve their prognosis significantly with physical activity. Experts recommend physical activity for all cancer patients and survivors to prevent recurring episodes of cancer.

Whether the patient has mesothelioma, breast, endometrial, prostate, or lung cancer, physical activity can improve the length of time the patient survives.

Every patient should consult with their physician to determine how much exercise is recommended for their specific condition. When your energy levels start to increase, you will feel motivated to exercise more often and go out and live your life!

Thank you Melanie Bowen – Mesothelioma Advocate for this wonderful and informative post.
